The major emphasis of great power competition has shifted significantly over history. Today, there is widespread disagreement on whether economic or military aims are more important in the sphere of great power competition. Economic influence is crucial because it determines access to resources, markets, and critical sectors, all of which are critical to economic growth and national security.
