University of Surrey’s Institute of Advanced Studies Fellow, Dr Bryan Khan, will be hosting a workshop on Music Copyright Fundamentals, which is open for both staff and students across Music and Media. This workshop will take the form of a 2.5-hour interactive lecture on the fundamental principles of copyright law as they apply to the music and audio-production industry. The session will combine discussion of legal concepts, music culture, and industry practice, alongside group listening and discussion exercises using song excerpts. The workshop is designed for those outside of the legal field seeking a practical overview of music copyright. No prior knowledge or preparation is required. Topics covered will include basic concepts of UK and international copyright law, co-songwriting agreements, sampling, and the main types of music licences.
About the speaker: Dr Bryan Khan, a researcher with over fifteen years of research experience in the field of international intellectual property (IP) and media law.
