This two-day workshop brings together leading practitioners and academics to explore ways in which the needs of individuals, organisations and the wider community can be reconciled. It considers barriers to the implementation of effective work-life balance initiatives and ways by which these could be overcome. The need to ensure work-life balance issues are at the heart of sustainable organisational practices is a key aim.
Organised by the DOP’s Work-Life Balance Working Group, chaired by Dr Almuth McDowall, University of Surrey and Professor Gail Kinman, University of Bedfordshire, the workshop includes presentations on work-life balance research and practical applications, together with panel sessions and interactive workshops.
KEYNOTE SPEAKERS
Professor Lotte Bailyn, Professor of Management at the MIT Sloan School of Management and author of "Breaking the Mold: Redesigning Work for Productive and Satisfying Lives" (2006) will discuss the importance of redesigning work structure and culture in order to enhance both work effectiveness and work-personal life integration. .
Professor Sue Lewis, Professor of Organisational Psychology of Middlesex University Business School will discuss some myths associated with the idea of work-life balance and suggest some new questions that need to be addressed in order to move these issues from the margins of organisations to the mainstream.
Professor Kaisa Kauppinen from the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health will focus on the Finnish experience with regards to maternity and paternity leave and gender equality, demonstrating how the UK could learn from other experiences.
