Dr Maki obtained his PhD in Engineering from Keio University. He joined Hitachi Ltd in 1999, where is currently a Principal Researcher. He holds the distinction of being an invited researcher at CNRS in France in 1999 and UCL in the UK in 2000. He pioneered the functional brain imaging technology using light, publishing the world's first paper on the subject in 1995. He is a leading figure in brain science research, with an h-index of 40, and an i10-index of 90, which are outstanding metrics for a corporate researcher. He holds around 200 patents, including groundbreaking work on brain function measurement and vein authentication technology using light.
Dr Maki developed innovative business strategies for the medical and consumer applications of optical topography, as well as novel approaches to applying brain science in diverse industries. Spearheaded a child development support business, recognising the crucial interplay between the environment and brain function in shaping mental well-being. Dr Maki is the recipient of numerous prestigious awards spanning natural science, engineering, industry, and design, including the R&D 100 in 2002, the Okochi Prize Memorial Award in 2003, and the Commendation for Science and Technology by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in 2005, among others. Published "Design that Resonates the Mind" with Bungeisha in 2021, showcasing expertise in translating brain science into practical design solutions.
